Getting a fix on the gulf oil slick
CSIRO scientists have been testing prototype sensor technology in the Gulf of Mexico and helping monitor the leading edge of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. (5:29)

A team of scientists is working around the clock to help map the oil’s location and movement. They were engaged by BP Exploration & Production Inc, on behalf of the Unified Area Command (UAC), to use CSIRO’s new hydrocarbon sensor array system that detects different types of hydrocarbons in the marine environment.
The system collects data that will help BP and the UAC better understand the affected marine environment and inform decisions on further analyses and strategies to be employed.
