Want to save fuel? Lighten Up!
Sam Tartaglia from CSIRO’s Light Metals Flagship says we can save on fuel costs, simply by driving lighter, safer vehicles. In this podcast, Sam explains how the use of light metals to take just 100 kilograms off the weight of our cars can save us 53 cents a litre every 100 kilometres. (4:59)

CSIRO’s Light Metals Flagship recently showcased technologies which offer high-performance, lightweight car components to the US automotive industry.
The technologies use magnesium and aluminium alloys to create strong, lightweight car parts which are cost competitive with structural components made of steel.
Sam Tartaglia explains that an added bonus is extra safety performance in the lighter, less fuel hungry vehicles.
CSIRO initiated the National Research Flagships to provide science-based solutions in response to Australia’s major research challenges and opportunities. The nine Flagships form multidisciplinary teams with industry and the research community to deliver impact and benefits for Australia.
