Australia’s oceans support rich biodiversity. CSIRO provides knowledge and tools to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of our ocean ecosystems and living resources in the in the face of escalating threats such as:

  • climate change
  • habitat loss
  • incidental capture
  • invasive marine pests.

CSIRO is delivering science to inform a new national management system for conserving Australia’s marine biodiversity, which will lead to triple-bottom-line benefits for our nation.

We are also investigating the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and species, and the flow-on effects on the industries and communities that rely on these resources.

In partnership with government and industry, our research is also helping to transform fisheries in Australia and our region to an economically productive and ecologically sustainable status.

We develop innovative techniques to further improve the quality of Australian aquaculture products to boost the value of the industry and deliver high-quality products for consumers with reduced environmental impact.

We work closely with government, industry, conservation organisations and other research agencies to achieve conservation and management gains supported by science.
