About CSIRO

CSIRO, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, is Australia's national science agency and one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world.

Blue resources

Delivering technologies to new and existing ocean-based industries that contribute to Australia’s wealth creation, energy security and lower emissions.

Novel technologies to reduce marine biofouling

- Biofouling affects ships, underwater infrastructure like pipes and cables, oil platforms, and even seismic survey equipment. A Wealth from Oceans Flagship team is testing advanced surface-based technologies to prevent biofouling. One approach is biomimicry, a technique of reproducing fouling-resistant surface structures found in nature. Learn more>

Exploring the social dimensions of seabed mining

- Wealth from Oceans Flagship research is exploring stakeholder reactions to the prospect of a seafloor exploration and mining industry expansion in Australia, identifying a number of initial stakeholder requirements that would need to be addressed if the industry is to expand. Learn more>

The Wells and Subsea Technologies Group program

- The Wells and Subsea Technologies program is working towards creating smart wells and ways to dispense with traditional platforms Learn more>

Subsea Pipeline Collaboration Cluster

Subsea Pipeline Collaboration Cluster

- The Subsea Pipeline Collaboration Cluster combines the research capabilities of six universities and the Wealth from Oceans Flagship. The cluster will deliver science-based engineering solutions for the safe and economic design and operation of subsea pipelines in Australia’s deepwater frontiers. Learn more>

Monitoring oil spills

Monitoring oil spills

- CSIRO scientists have been deployed to help monitor the leading edge of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Learn more>

The bulk of Australia’s oil and gas reserves lie offshore. Accessing the gas reserves is a major plank in the nation’s transition to a low greenhouse-gas economy, but some are in remote locations, up to 300 km from the coast and in waters 1000 metres deep.

CSIRO works closely with industry partners, bringing together diverse science and engineering skills to develop technologies to access this oil and gas in an efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable manner.

We also:

  • explore the social and environmental dimensions of emerging marine industries, including seabed mining
  • develop novel technologies to combat issues like marine biofouling
  • use genetic biodiversity from marine organisms in applications ranging from health-benefiting land plants to water filtration.
