A CSIRO team is creating environmentally safe surfaces that inhibit the attachment and growth of biofouling organisms on underwater surfaces.
Link Grid Divisional
The bulk of Australia’s oil and gas reserves lie offshore. Accessing the gas reserves is a major plank in the nation’s transition to a low greenhouse-gas economy, but some are in remote locations, up to 300 km from the coast and in waters 1000 metres deep.
CSIRO works closely with industry partners, bringing together diverse science and engineering skills to develop technologies to access this oil and gas in an efficient, safe and environmentally sustainable manner.
We also:
- explore the social and environmental dimensions of emerging marine industries, including seabed mining
- develop novel technologies to combat issues like marine biofouling
- use genetic biodiversity from marine organisms in applications ranging from health-benefiting land plants to water filtration.
