CSIRO and Chile have worked together in the minerals sector for over 15 years.
We face many similar challenges, including:
- processing lower grade ores
- deeper mining
- arid environments
- water constraints
- increasing energy costs.
| These shared challenges make us natural partners in this area, which is why we have formed the CSIRO Chile International Centre of Excellence in Mining and Mineral Processing (CSIRO Chile Centre of Excellence).
CSIRO Chile International Centre of Excellence in Mining and Mineral ProcessingThe CSIRO Chile Centre of Excellence is one of five centres established under Chile’s International Centres of Excellence Program [pdf 1.91mb]. |
The Program was created to facilitate the establishment of five world-class research and development centres that will address Chile’s key priorities: aquaculture, global services, food industry, special interest tourism and mining.
The CSIRO Chile Centre of Excellence will be a landmark facility and will have nodes initially in Santiago and Antofagasta, Chile.
The Centre will be a landmark facility and will have nodes initially in Santiago and Antofagasta.
The Centre will draw on the expertise of CSIRO and its key research and development partners:
- University of Chile
- University of Antofagasta
- Cicitem.
The Centre will also work together with its major industry partners:
- Anglo American North S.A. and Anglo American South S.A.
- Antofagasta Minerals S.A.
- BHP Chile Inc.
- Codelco
- Xstrata Copper Chile S.A.
Together these organisations will work to increase the productivity and longevity of Australia’s and Chile’s mining and minerals sectors through developing new cutting edge technologies and improving current services and equipment.
Led by Dr Neal Wai Poi, CSIRO Chile Centre of Excellence will benefit both countries by:
- creating new bilateral business opportunities for service companies in Australia and Chile
- finding ways to improve mine safety
- reducing the environmental impact of mining
- creating new skilled jobs and postgraduate opportunities.
CSIRO Chile Centre of Excellence will have a ten year lifespan. This is a long-term investment for CSIRO.
