Biodiversity

CSIRO research is helping to underpin a national effort to halt biodiversity decline.

On the remote Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, a town called Aurukun lies nestled in the largest intact area of tropical savanna in the world. Never systematically surveyed before, CSIRO scientists head deep into the wilderness to study native birds, mammals and reptiles and come up with a few surprises.

Lake, mountains and sky.

A more flexible approach to the expansion of protected area systems could ultimately protect much more biodiversity for the same budget.

- CSIRO is the lead partner in the Atlas of Living Australia which is a collaborative, national project focused on making biodiversity information more accessible and useable. Learn more>

Sustainable management of our ecosystems and the rich life within them remains one of the key natural resource management challenges.

CSIRO is finding ways to preserve and restore biodiversity and looking to create a balance between human development and conservation. We are also researching the ways in which species interact to maintain healthy ecosystems.

Understanding, conserving and providing information for the management of the ecological processes is a key goal for CSIRO’s researchers.
