Light Metals Flagship

CSIRO’s Light Metals Flagship's goal is to increase productivity and competitiveness of Australian light metal production and manufacturing by providing low energy, high productivity technologies.
About the Flagship

Technologies for a sustainable light metals industry

Partnership Highlights

Supporting the aluminium industry to remain globally competitive by developing new energy saving technologies.

A grey engine block sitting on a laboratory bench.

The Light Metals Flagship is working with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Design in Light Metals and the CAST CRC to develop light metals technologies that will help in the global race to make lighter, fuel-efficient cars.

A new casting technology, producing super-light magnesium alloy components that are cost-competitive with aluminium and steel, will be taken to market by a joint venture between the Light Metals Flagship and three South Australian manufacturing companies.

Research Highlights

Hands holding wood chips and biocoke

CSIRO has developed a process to make a dense, high purity biocoke which is comparable in cost and quality with metallurgical grade petcoke, and seeks a commercial partner who is willing to invest in further development and trialling of this product in an industrial setting.

Bauxite in two hands.

Light Metals Flagship researchers are working with industry to develop new technology to treat high reactive silica ores. This will enable currently uneconomic bauxite resources to be processed.

Titanium powder

CSIRO scientists are developing a novel, high-efficiency process for making titanium metal with the aim of paving the way for a revolution in titanium metal production and fabrication.

High energy electrical connections in an aluminium smelter

CSIRO offers consulting and training services for maximising efficiency of high current electrical connections used in primary metal production industries.
