CSIRO's new Climate Adaptation National Research Flagship has been established to help Australia adapt to climate change outcomes like this recent storm surge on Queensland's Gold Coast.

South East Queensland Climate Adaptation Research Initiative

This three year research program will assess south-east Queensland's vulnerability to climate change, and develop practical, cost-effective strategies to help the region adapt.

Introduction

Future climate

South-east Queensland's growing population and coastal location make it particularly vulnerable to climate change.

The region's human settlements, infrastructure, unique ecosystems and primary industries all face threats from more extreme weather events, increased temperatures and altered rainfall patterns.

These changes have the potential to dramatically affect our lifestyles, environment and economy. However, climate change may also bring economic and social opportunities.

New research

It is the first comprehensive, regional study of climate change adaptation in Australia, and one of just a few worldwide.

The South East Queensland Climate Adaptation Research Initiative (SEQ-CARI) was established to examine south-east Queensland's vulnerability to climate change, and develop practical, cost-effective strategies to help the region adapt.

It is the first comprehensive, regional study of climate change adaptation in Australia, and one of just a few worldwide.

The initiative will develop new, more detailed climate change projections for south-east Queensland, and assess the comparative vulnerability of each sub-region.

Research will focus on the implications for agriculture, infrastructure, the environment, public health and emergency services.

Partnership

State and local governments, industries and community groups will be key participants in the research program, which involves more than 30 scientists from:

  • CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship
  • Griffith University
  • The University of the Sunshine Coast
  • The University of Queensland.

The initiative is supported by funding from all four research organisations, the Queensland Government Smart State Innovation Fund, and the Australian Government Department of Climate Change.

It will be guided by an advisory committee representing major stakeholders in the region.

Fast facts

  • SEQ's population and coastal location make it particularly vulnerable to climate change
  • This program will study SEQ's vulnerability to climate change, and develop practical, cost-effective strategies to help it adapt
  • CSIRO is working with universities, state and local governments, industries and community groups to address the challenge
